dusk DIY Guides
At dusk there's a vast array
of candle holders to choose from. Most require nothing
more than a decision about where they look best. But some
also require a bit of installation – nothing more
than a reasonable DIYer could do with one or two tools,
screws or hooks. Enter our easy step-by-step guides, the
first of which are below.
Hanging Wall Sconces
STEP 1
Decide where you want to hang your wall sconce. While
you are holding it in place, mark the wall in
the screw loops that will hang the sconce.
STEP 2
If you are using wall mates, place the point of the
mate on the mark you have made and screw it into
the wall so that the flat part of the mate is level
with the wall surface.
STEP 3
If you are using rawlplugs, drill a hole into the
wall on the mark(s) you have made and then tap
a rawlplug in until it is flush with the wall.
STEP 4
Screw in your screws, leaving sufficient length exposed
for the screw loops on the sconce.
STEP 5
Hang your wall sconce and decorate with your favourite
votives or tealights.
Hanging Chandeliers
STEP 1
Decide where you want to hang your chandelier. Mark
the ceiling where the hook needs to be and then
drill an 8mm hole through the ceiling on the
mark.
STEP 2
Drill an 8mm hole in the centre of a piece of 70
x 35 timber (this must be easily long enough to
span three ceiling joists).
STEP 3
In your loft space, locate the hole you drilled through
the ceiling and attach the timber to the joists
so that both drilled holes line up.
STEP 4
Fix your hook through the ceiling and the timber.
Secure with washers and nuts as shown.
STEP 5
Hang your chandelier and decorate with your favourite
votives, tealights and accessories.
